Should You Airbnb for a Week Before Renting in Spain?

The default advice everyone gives

Every forum thread about moving to Spain includes the same chorus: never rent without seeing it first, Airbnb for a week, walk the neighbourhoods, be on the ground to find the good deals.

The advice is well-intentioned but expensive. The average expat spends €800–€1,500 on temporary accommodation while searching, plus two to four weeks of disrupted work. For remote workers and families that is a real cost, not a rounding error.

When Airbnb-first is the right call

• You have no knowledge of Spanish neighbourhoods. If you can't tell Malasaña from Tetuán, a week of walking is genuinely valuable.
• You're moving with a family. School districts, park access and safety matter more than headline rent, and commute times need testing at different hours.
• You have complex requirements. Pet-friendly plus accessible plus a specific school zone is a rare combination where local networking helps.
• You have four or more weeks before you need a permanent address, which makes the strategy low-risk.
• You speak fluent Spanish and can negotiate in person, which opens doors that platforms close.

When you can skip Airbnb and rent remotely

• You're a solo remote worker with standard needs — one bedroom, good WiFi, metro access — which is exactly what a filtered, ranked search handles well from abroad.
• You're on a tight timeline. If you need an address within two weeks of landing, a search week adds delay you don't have.

When remote rental goes wrong

The horror stories are real, but they follow a pattern. Nearly all remote-rental disasters involve at least one of these five mistakes:
